At the close of their set yesterday at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, the Red Hot Chili Peppers brought out a few NOLA natives to help them through one of their classic tunes.

Before playing their final song, bassist Flea took the microphone to announce they would be joined on the song by “some people who have inspired us very, very, very much through the years and taught us so much.” Those people turned out to be The Meters’ bassist George Porter Jr. and drummer Zigaboo Modeliste. Dumpstaphunk keyboardist Ivan Neville also joined the group onstage.

On Friday, The Meters kicked off Jazz Fest with a rare performance with all four original members in a night that featured special guests like Warren Haynes, Grace Potter, Bernie Worrell, Neville, Trombone Shorty and more.

“They invented funk. They invented this shit. We are their students!” Flea proclaimed yesterday before singer Anthony Kiedis joked that he heard Pat Boone and Robert Goulet invented funk. Just before the collective started the groove that would become “Give It Away,” Flea turned to Porter to say, “I hope I can hear you guys. Make that shit loud, George.” Watch a video of the performance above.
