On November 15, Robert Greenfield will release Bear: The Life and Times of Augustus Owsley Stanley III, his new biography of the iconic Grateful Dead cohort, who passed away in March of 2011.

Stanley was an audio engineer and chemist who was a staple of the ’60s San Francisco scene and famously provided LSD to members of the Grateful Dead and the legendary Acid Tests run by Ken Kesey and his Merry Pranksters, along with The Beatles and others. He was also a well-known taper, recording shows by the Dead and other musicians such as Jefferson Airplane, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and more. Stanley was also name-checked when Dead & Company bassist Oteil Burbridge recently discussed taking acid with the band during a show.

As JamBase notes, the new biography, which can be pre-ordered here, features anecdotes from members of the Dead like Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir and Phil Lesh. Greenfield has also penned other music biographies Dark Star: An Oral History Of Jerry Garcia, Exile on Main St.: A Season in Hell with the Rolling Stones and, along with Bill Graham, Bill Graham Presents: My Life Inside Rock and Out.
