While his former bandmate Bob Weir was ringing the new year elsewhere in the state, Phil Lesh also welcomed 2017 in Hawaii, playing three sets of classics at the Hawaii Theater in Honolulu with a group of Friends including his son Grahame, Scott Law, Ross James, Jason Crosby and Alex Koford.

Lesh and company kicked off with the Dead favorite “Shakedown Street” and also filled the first set with a Lesh-led “Box of Rain” and Alex Koford taking the vocal reins on “Wharf Rat.” Set number two started with Scott Law singing “Althea” and included a couple of group tunes in “Terrapin Station” and “I Know You Rider” to close the frame.

The collective rounded out 2016 by counting down to the new year and began 2017 with a run of “Sugar Magnolia” into “Scarlet Begonias” and “Fire on the Mountain.” The third set would later close out the show with the band coming together for “St. Stephen” with “The Eleven” stuck in the middle and a finale of “Not Fade Away.”
