On Friday night, Phil Lesh & The Terrapin Family Band wrapped up their three-night run in the New York City area with a special benefit concert supporting HeadCount’s voter registration efforts, taking place at Harlem’s famed Apollo Theater and featuring returning special guests Eric Krasno and Nicki Bluhm, plus Robert Randolph and appearances from Talib Kweli and the Harlem Gospel Choir.

Set one opened the night with Grateful Dead favorites like “Uncle John’s Band,” “Friend of the Devil,” “Ramble On Rose,” “Bertha” and “Box of Rain,” plus covers of Bob Dylan’s “Tangled Up in Blue,” Marvin Gaye’s “How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)” and Neil Young’s classic Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young protest song “Ohio.”

The collective kicked off set two by wishing Peter Shapiro a musical happy birthday (Shapiro is the founder of Dayglo, who helped present the event with HeadCount, which Shapiro also co-founded), followed by more Dead staples “Viola Lee Blues” and “Estimated Prophet.” The additional guest spots began a few songs later, with Talib Kweli joining in on “Shakedown Street” and his own track “Get By,” which also featured the Harlem Gospel Choir. Kweli dedicated the song to Mac Miller, a fellow rapper who tragically passed away yesterday at the age of 26.

The choir then stuck around to lend their voices to another Dylan tune, “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door” and the closing song, Bobby Bland’s oft-covered “Turn On Your Love Light.” Last night’s encore, also featuring the choir, rounded out the performance with “Touch of Grey.”
