Fresh off the heels of Live After Deaf, the immense compilation from Ryan Adams’ 2011 European solo tour, the singer-songwriter offers his latest live recording from New York City’s famed Carnegie Hall. If Live After Deaf was the primer, then Carnegie Hall is the payoff, as the two-night run finds Adams at total ease and in control of the music and crowd. Along with standards from his solo repertoire like “New York, New York,” “My Winding Wheel,” “Oh My Sweet Carolina” and others, Adams also offers stripped-down versions of some of his newer tunes, most surprisingly “Rats in the Wall” from his punk-rock-themed EP, 1984. Fans of Whiskeytown will also find “Avenues” tucked toward the end of the first night’s set. Nearly equal to the music, however, is the self-deprecating, often-hysterical banter that has become somewhat of a calling card for Adams in his more recent years. Contrasting the somber material with musings on Terminator 2 and Billy Ocean almost seems therapeutic for the guitarist. Adams’ deep, intimate connection to the city and venue are also apparent throughout both nights, making this the quintessential DRA live release. In Adams’ words, “black heart” is in it the whole way.
